International Conference 2022: „Science and Research in, for and with UNESCO Biosphere Reserves”

Brandenburg/ BR Schorfheide-Chorin

From 16-20 May 2022 the Biosphere Reserves Institute (BRI) organises an international research conference in the Schorfheide-Chorin Biosphere Reserve. The conference is supported by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) with funds from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) and with financial support from the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture (MWFK) of the State of Brandenburg.

About 120 early career scientists and research managers from the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves are invited to jointly develop strategies for future action. In order to promote research for sustainable development, current research results and positive experiences from research management will be exchanged.

The project is intended to contribute to the Lima Action Plan. Since 2015, this plan calls on the UNSESCO network of biosphere reserves and the member states to strengthen the area of research in biosphere reserves and to interconnect research more effectively. Within the framework of an international conference, the BRI would therefore like to find answers to the following questions and develop strategies for future action together with the participants:

  • Which research questions are currently being investigated in biosphere reserves? How can the results be used?
  • What has been achieved in the promotion of research in biosphere reserves since the Lima Action Plan was adopted?
  • What are the most effective framework conditions, concepts and approaches to foster target-oriented research and innovation in biosphere reserves?
